Though the province’s ethnic majority originates from the British Isles, many British Columbians also trace their ancestors to continental Europe, East Asia, and South Asia. British Columbia is a diverse and cosmopolitan province, drawing on a plethora of cultural influences from its diasporas of British, European, and Asian Canadians, as well as the Indigenous population. In 1871, British Columbia entered Confederation as the sixth province of Canada, in enactment of the British Columbia Terms of Union. One of the earliest British settlements in the area was Fort Victoria, established in 1843, which gave rise to the city of Victoria, the capital of the Colony of Vancouver Island. With an estimated population of 5.68 million as of 2025, it is Canada’s third-most populous province.

Distinctive areas of unforested open grassland along the Fraser River, south of Williams Lake, and in the Kamloops-Meritt region south of the North Thompson River have rich pedocal soils upon which British Columbia’s ranching sector flourishes. The Columbia follows the Rocky Mountain Trench northward, bends around the northern end of the Selkirk Mountains, and turns south to flow into the Arrow Lakes and then into the U.S. states of Washington and Oregon. The province reaches its highest elevation in the far northwest at Mount Fairweather (15,300 feet 4,663 metres), located in the St. Elias Mountains (a range of the Coast Mountains) on the Alaskan border. The two major ranges are the Coast Mountains, which lie in the western part of the province, and the Canadian portion of the Rocky Mountains in the eastern part. One of the last regions of the North American continent to be explored and settled, British Columbia emerged in the second half of the 20th century as one of the leading provinces of Canada in population, economic wealth, and overall growth.

British Columbia’s coast, stretching over 15,900 miles, features numerous inlets and fjords, providing a natural haven for marine life. As a result, within the last few centuries the dates are rarely marked with CE (or AD). Outside historical contexts, BCE / CE (or BC / AD) distinction is unnecessary & it is understood that when unspecified, the year in question is CE (or AD). Its upto the writers to choose one system or based on what their audience prefer, but they should use consistently one system.

The largest section of this employment is in finance, insurance, real estate and corporate management; however, many areas outside of metropolitan areas are still heavily reliant on resource extraction. The province is home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra, and the Victoria Symphony. This school is generally considered to include artists Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Ken Lum, Roy Arden, Stan Douglas, and Rodney Graham. The Vancouver School of conceptual photography encompasses a cohort of Vancouver-based artists who gained notoriety in the 1980s. Vancouver’s art scene was dominated by lyrical abstraction and surrealist landscape painting in the mid-20th century through such artists as B. Notable English-Canadian artists of 19th and early 20th century British Columbia include architect Francis Rattenbury, designer James Blomfield, and painter Emily Carr.
